Sites to improve area coverage
Cingular Wireless customers may notice increased coverage when driving around the Fredericksburg region.
That's because the company has added five new towers in the area to boost its local service.
"There's a larger amount of wireless phone users. The more dense the population, the more sites you end up needing," said Alexa Kaufman, regional public relations manager for Cingular's northeast division.
The towers have been placed in the following areas:
One on Harrison Road is geared toward boosting coverage near Spotsylvania Mall and Central Park, so that shoppers there will have stronger service while inside businesses there.
One each off Burma Road in Caroline County and where State Route 2 and U.S. 17 intersect in Spotsylvania County near New Post, which aim to boost coverage along the U.S. 17 Business commuter route toward Port Royal.
Two others are on U.S. 17, west of Interstate 95. One serves the Hartwood community, and the other the southwestern portion of Stafford County.
"Fredericksburg has been an area of focus for us," Kaufman said. "Our store there has been successful. We want to support that community as they've supported us."
Cingular, a joint venture between SBC Communications and Bell South, earlier announced plans to merge with AT&T Wireless--the nation's No. 2 wireless firm. That deal--expected to close by year's end--would create the nation's largest wireless carrier.
As part of that agreement, Cingular last week announced a deal with Triton PCS--which operates SunCom--to take all of its Virginia customers. In exchange, Triton would get part of Cingular's network in North Carolina and Puerto Rico.
In general, Cingular provides service in the Fredericksburg region and areas north. SunCom reaches areas south.
If approved, the deal means all of Cingular's and SunCom's Virginia customers would be on one network. That should bring them improved statewide service with fewer roaming fees, Glen Mella, SunCom's senior vice president of marketing and sales, said last week.
