Lucien Shoemaker

John Lucien Moss Shoemaker, beloved husband, son, brother and friend, 24, of Bountiful, Utah, was taken home to his heavenly Father Aug. 4, 2004, as a result of an automobile accident.

He was married to Valerie Ann Johnson Dec. 4, 2003, in the Latter-day Saints Mount Timpanogas temple in American Fork, Utah. His wonderful smile and warm sense of humor will be greatly missed.

Lucien was born Aug. 13, 1979, in Warrenton to John R. Shoemaker of Culpeper and Donna H. Shoemaker of Shepherdstown, W.Va. He graduated from Spotsylvania High School in 1997. During high school he was part of the Civil Air Patrol and also served on the Search and Rescue Team with his father. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1998 to 2000 in Leon, Mexico. He was enrolled in the Global Aviation program at Utah Valley State College and was working toward his commercial pilot's license. He served as the assistant executive secretary for the Kimball Mill LDS ward.

Lucien had a childlike fascination for the simple things in life. He loved star-gazing, cloud-watching, golfing, fishing, and playing strategic games like Risk, Monopoly, paintball and cops & robbers. Flying airplanes was his passion from an early age. Above all else he loved Valerie; he was honored by her acceptance of his proposal of marriage (both times). Besides cherishing every moment they spent together, Lucien and Valerie enjoyed flying kites, hiking and sharing their lives with one another.

Lucien never met a stranger; he had a special talent for making friends. His family wishes to thank the many friends from work, church and school who have contacted them with expressions of comfort and offerings of assistance.

He is survived by his wife, Valerie; his parents, John and Donna; two sisters, Hilarie and Rebecca Shoemaker; parents-in-law, Wallace and Alice Johnson and their family; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins across the country; his maternal grandmother, Stasia Heard; and his paternal grandfather, Philip Shoemaker.

Viewings will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, at the Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 N. Main St., Bountiful, Utah, and preceding the funeral from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Kimball Mill Ward Building, 650 S. 200 E. in Bountiful. The funeral begins at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in the Memorial Estates Cemetery, 1640 E. Lakeview Drive, Bountiful, Utah. In lieu of flowers, donations will be kindly accepted.

A memorial service will be held next week in Fredericksburg with an announcement forthcoming.
