YOU KNOW HOW you like getting calls, letters, and e-mails from friends and family, and how you don't like hearing from telemarketers, junk-mail houses, and e-mail Spammers? We're kind of like that around here. The Free Lance-Star loves to hear from readers, whether you like what's in the paper, or whether you think our product is best used for fish-wrap or bird-cage lining, whether you're an elephant fan or a donkey fanatic. All your comments are welcome--both positive and negative criticism can help us improve and your political opinions keep the debate alive. What we don't like to receive is letters to the editor generated by political campaigns--even if we like the candidates for whom the campaigns are speaking--or special interest groups. Because we're already deep into the presidential election season, we've received letters of this ilk from both contenders' camps. The people supporting President Bush and Sen. John Kerry have developed eloquent "talking points" that you can download and easily e-mail to us. It's quick, and especially around this busy area, it can be tempting to copy-and-paste these prefab comments and send them our way. Don't do it. We want to hear your opinions expressed in your own words. Why? Because we care about what our hometown readers--not just political activists--are thinking.
