Bush supporters should discuss issues, pitch Vietnam talk

September 2, 2004 1:12 am

I recently received an e-mail featuring a picture of Sen. John Kerry and actress Jane Fonda at an antiwar rally during the Vietnam era, and an attack on Kerry's efforts to become our next president because of his activities during that era.

The picture was a fake. Two pictures taken at separate events and at different times had been spliced together to make it appear Kerry and Fonda were together.

My message box has been flooded in recent weeks with mean-spirited, hateful pieces like this, from Republicans supporting the efforts of George W. Bush to have a second term as our president.

These are the same tactics used by President Bush to defeat Sen. John McCain during a bitter presidential primary fight in South Carolina four years ago.

Voters need to reflect on the character of those who would resort to such tactics.

I am more concerned about the Iraq war, our role there, how we are going to deal with terrorists, the burden this generation's tax cuts generated, economic problems for the middle class, a better environment, an improved health-care system, alternative energies, good schools and colleges, improved transportation systems, and more stem-cell research.

I doubt Bush supporters who are using smear tactics will be able to address the real issues facing us instead of who did what more than 30 years ago.
