Tricord, county officials, preservationists seek public input on Mullins farm.

The key players in the deal to preserve part of the historic Mullins farm want input from Spotsylvania County residents on how best to conserve that portion of the Chancellorsville battlefield.
Officials from Spotsylvania and representatives of developer Tricord Inc. and the Civil War Preservation Trust will discuss plans for the land on State Route 3 during a community meeting at 7 p.m. tonight at Resurrection Lutheran Church.
Tricord purchased 227 acres of the farm from owner John Mullins. The company is selling 140 acres of that land to the trust. Tricord officials plan to develop age-restricted housing and a continuing-care center on the remaining 87 acres.
The development will require a rezoning, and Tricord President Doug Jones said tonight's meeting will give county residents a chance to offer their thoughts on the project.
"We're just hoping to let people know what will be presentedand let them have more of a format for questions and discussion," he said. "The public meeting gives the public a chance to interact with the proposalso that they do have a part in shaping the plan."
Board of Supervisors Chairman Bob Hagan--who played a pivotal role in crafting the preservation agreement--will moderate tonight's discussion.
Attorneys for Tricord and the CWPT are ironing out the final details of their agreement.
"The lawyers just need to work out a few minor details," said preservation trust spokesman Jim Campi. "All of the major hurdles have been dealt with. It's a complicated deal, and it takes time to dot all the I's and cross all the T's."
Campi said the organization's first priority is to raise $3 million to repay the loan it is taking out to purchase the land from Tricord.
"We've been getting a lot of inquiries at the trust about when the fund-raising campaign is going to begin. There are a lot of people out there who are very anxious to donate money toward this preservation effort."
