Free speech? Not if your message is deemed unworthy

Date published: 10/28/2004

Free political speech isn't dead after all--unless your point of view differs from the line shilled by the Republican Party.

The Free Lance-Star reported that a Kerry-Edwards sign at Lake of the Woods had been vandalized, but was replaced and is now being watched to prevent further vandalism ["Club stakes out campaign sign," Oct. 11].

My understanding is that the owner of the Lake of the Woods hardware store where the sign was located has been told by several of his most frequent customers that unless the sign was removed, they would no longer patronize his business.

Then one recent morning, as I was driving home along State Route 3, I saw a slew of Bush-Cheney signs blanketing the right of way and median strip from the Interstate 95 exit to my turn on State Route 621. These signs are trashy, and it's illegal to post them on highway rights of way.

I find it insulting that these people think posted signs will somehow make a person change his or her vote.

As a final slap in the face, I was assailed by yet another Bush handout crammed into my newspaper box along with my newspaper.

And although you mentioned the vandalism of Bush signs, nobody seems to be able to provide details, unlike the documented destruction of Kerry signs.

It's almost like that mysterious vandalism that occurred in the White House after the last election--nobody could ever find proof.
