The GoodLife Theatre of Rappahannock County will perform one show to celebrate two important occasions--Children's Book Week and Native American Heritage Month.

"Tanka Tales" delves into the myths that surround the culture of American Indians from the East Coast, the Plains and the Pacific Northwest. The 45-minute puppet show will take place Saturday at the Culpeper County Library.

"We've taken these Native American stories and put them in puppetry form," Jeanne Wall, who will present the show with her husband Joe Pipik, said in a telephone interview from her home in Rappahannock County.

As master artists with the Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts, Wall and Pipik travel to elementary school classrooms across the country.

Saturday's "Tanka Tales" performance will utilize hand, rod and shadow puppets. The presentation is designed to foster an appreciation for American Indian culture and art and to highlight the prevailing Indian philosophy of respect--for ourselves, each other and the environment.

One story centers on the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens and the ways in which American Indians explained its origin and the damage left behind when it flattened hundreds of miles of forest within minutes.

Another tale tells of two brothers who are unable to share the resources of the earth and are punished by the loss of the gift of fire. A third story revolves around a hero named Glooscap, who tries to rid the land of cold and misery.
