Brooke Point selects Margheim as new AD

Margheim named AD at Brooke Point

By NATHAN WARTERS

Greg Margheim had three good reasons for accepting the position as activities director and assistant principal at Brooke Point High School.

Their names are Jensen, Riley and Grayson.

Margheim, who lives in Stafford County, was growing tired of not seeing his three young children.

Daughters Jensen and Riley are 5 and 3 years old, respectively. Son Grayson is seven months old.

There would be long spans during work weeks where he'd rarely see them, if at all.

"For four straight days, I wouldn't see my kids," he said. "By the time I got home, they'd all be in bed."

Getting closer to home at Brooke Point will allow Margheim, 36, to better watch his children grow up.

Margheim, who is currently the activities director at first-year Freedom High School in Prince William County, will assume the duties at Brooke Point on Jan. 3.

He replaces Chris Courtney, who will take over as AD at Mountain View, Stafford County's newest high school.

Courtney is the only AD Brooke Point has known. He was there when the school first opened in 1993.

"You can't just come in and think you're going to fill his shoes right away," Margheim said.

Margheim was the activities director at Woodbridge for 4 years before taking over at Freedom on Dec. 16 last year.

Before replacing current Stafford activities director Wes Bergazzi as the Woodbridge's AD in 2000, Margheim was the Vikings' baseball coach for five years. He led the Vikings to two Cardinal District championships his last two years. His last game as Woodbridge's baseball coach was a 1-0 loss to North Stafford in the region playoffs.

The Potomac High School and Virginia Tech graduate pitched for the Hokies and was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 1990.

He played 2 seasons of minor league baseball in the Reds' system before a rotator cuff injury derailed his pitching career right before he was slated for a move up to Double-A.

He was the pitching coach at Virginia Tech for two seasons and the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at George Washington University for two years more before taking the Woodbridge coaching position.

Margheim said leaving Freedom was "a tough decision, because I really enjoyed Freedom."

But being closer to his family was important. And he'll be an assistant principal at Brooke Point, a job he didn't hold at Freedom.

When he found out that Courtney was moving to Mountain View, Margheim attended some of Brooke Point's football games to examine the atmosphere and to get a feel for what the school was about.

"Brooke Point is a great school," he said. "I just liked what I saw."
