Computer glitch causes VRE delay Date published: 1/12/2005
A problem with the CSX Rail computer system shut down train traffic in the Washington region for about 90 minutes today, delaying at least three Virginia Railway Express trains. Around 3 p.m., one of the servers at CSX’s Jacksonville dispatch center went down, halting train traffic on about one-third of the company’s rail system, said CSX spokeswoman Misty Skipper. CSX operates nearly 43,000 miles of track east of the Mississippi River, including much of the railroad in the Washington region. The computer glitch was fixed around 4:30, Skipper said. She did not know what caused the server problem. “Our focus was restoring service,” she said. “We’ll now work to determine the cause of it.” Trains, including those for Amtrak, VRE and MARC, were unable to move for about 90 minutes. Around 4:30 p.m., VRE announced that its trains would begin moving shortly. Train 303, which usually arrives in Fredericksburg at 5:08 p.m., is about 50 minutes late. Train 305, which normally pulls into Fredericksburg at 5:35 p.m., is running 25 minutes late. Train 327 on the Manassas line is running about 40 minutes late. Earlier, CSX had been unable to tell commuter rail officials when the problem would be fixed. VRE considering marshaling buses from regional transit systems to ferry passengers home, but it takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 50 minutes to kick that plan into action, Roeber said.
