Man charged after mother of his child goes to authorities Date published: 3/22/2005 By KEITH EPPS Police said Charles Coleman landed the hardest blow during a dispute with the mother of his child. But the woman fired back with a verbal attack that landed Coleman, 23, of Woodford in Caroline County, in the Rappahannock Regional Jail. Thanks to information supplied by the woman after the Saturday altercation, Coleman was charged with drug offenses and became a suspect in a burglary. According to Fredericksburg police spokesman Jim Shelhorse, the 21-year-old woman called police about 5 p.m. Saturday to report an assault at her home in Forest Village. The woman, who has a child in common with Coleman, said Coleman assaulted her during an argument about suspected crack cocaine she found in the home. Shelhorse said the woman was struck on the right side of the cheek, causing her nose to bleed and bruise. When police arrived, she handed them a blue box containing an expensive belt buckle with a Spotsylvania County man's name inscribed on it. She informed police Coleman told her he had stolen it during a break-in in Spotsylvania, Shelhorse said. City police contacted the Sheriff's Office in Spotsylvania and learned that the home of the man whose name was on the buckle had been burglarized last year. The man was called and described the belt buckle that had been taken in the theft. He came to police headquarters and identified the buckle. Spotsylvania authorities are investigating Coleman as a suspect in that theft. City police obtained an assault and battery warrant against Coleman and arrested him later that evening at the apartment complex, Shelhorse said. They searched him and turned up nine bags with suspected Percocet painkiller pills and marijuana, Shelhorse said. That led to charges of possession of marijuana and possession of Percocet with the intent to distribute, Shelhorse said. The woman also obtained a protective order against Coleman.
