Rose A. Makin

Rose Aloysia Makin, 90, a founding resident of Lake of the Woods in Orange County, died Wednesday, March 23, 2005, at Mary Washington Hospital.

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, William Thomas Makin.

Survivors include her three children and their spouses, Robin John Makin and his wife, Ellen, of Fredericksburg, Avis Marie McCutchan and her husband, Lawrence, of Floyd, and Douglas Joseph Makin and his wife, Nancy, of Fredericksburg. Mrs. Makin also is survived by 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa., in 1915, Mrs. Makin was the daughter of Joseph and Rose Mast. She enjoyed early life in Philadelphia and on the Jersey shore. She met and married her husband, a World War II veteran, after the war and left her career with the IRS to devote herself to her husband and to raising their three children in a Catholic Diocese in Rockville, Md.

In her later years, Mrs. Makin became a world traveler. For many years, she spent her days fulfilling a childhood dream of traveling the world. She stood on the Great Wall of China, toured the outback of Australia, climbed the Andes in South America, and among many other things, was once featured in a travel publication while snorkeling in the South Pacific at age 70. Eventually, Mrs. Makin visited every continent. She will long be remembered by her family and friends for her joy in life, her energy and her optimism.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 26, in Sunset Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. David Martin officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be sent to Mary Washington Hospital Palliative Medical Unit, c/o Mary Washington Hospital Foundation, Snowden Farm, Box 1958, Fredericksburg, Va. 22402.
