Arlington considers limits on massive houses.

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - Arlington County could soon have the region's first significant limits on so-called McMansions.

For years, local governments have tried to stem the popular trend of tearing down older homes and replacing them with multi million dollar structures that tower over the rest of the neighborhood.

According to a published report, some jurisdictions have set strict

height limits and even limited tree cutting to rein in gigantic residences.

Now, Arlington County lawmakers are planning to debate rules that would reduce the square footage that a house and driveway can cover on a lot. The guidelines would vary by lot size and location.

Opponents, however, say the rules will hurt the average homeowner who just wants to add a deck or kitchen.
