Vatican releases video of pope speaking Date published: 3/11/2005 VATICAN CITY (AP) - The Vatican has released a video of Pope John Paul speaking -- the first time he's been heard publicly since a throat operation last month. The tape shows the pope meeting with Tanzanian bishops in his hospital room. He's seated during a Mass. The pope recites a prayer, but his voice is barely audible. His visitors tell him they're praying for him, and the pontiff responds in a husky voice, saying "va bene" -- Italian for "OK." The meeting could indicate the frail pope is stepping up his activities before returning to the Vatican. Doctors have extended his hospital stay "a few more days." But the Vatican says he still plans to return in time for the start Holy Week on March 20th. (Copyright 2005 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
