Hornets thwart Devils
Girls soccer: Orange 1, Culpeper 0

Date published: 3/31/2005

The Culpeper girls soccer team denied Orange's Brentney Moore any goals in back-to-back games and only has a pair of losses to show for its effort.

The Hornets upped their record to 3-0 on the strength of a first-half goal by Kelsey Gillan and solid defensive play led by sweeper Lily Brookman and goalie Chelsea Gianniny. Orange held a 12-11 shot advantage in the 1-0 win.

"Brentney is a great player and everyone works off her. Orange is very disciplined and they do that the entire game," said Culpeper coach Glenn McAninch, whose Blue Devils fell to 1-3. "Our defense has been solid, but the offense isn't as far along as I thought it would be. With the amount of possession we're having, we have to find a way to score goals."

Twenty-eight minutes into the contest, Gillan sent a high-lofting shot from 35 yards out. Culpeper's goalie did not seem to have any difficulty in anticipating the ball's arrival, but the shot went through her hands for the score.

Gillan made frequent visits to the Hornets bench in the second half when she was bothered by a hamstring pull, but teamed with fellow freshman Martha Clements and sophomore Stephanie Modena to keep the pressure on Culpeper's defense.

Moore had several chances to score in the second half, but lead passes were a little too long and on one occasion, with under five minutes remaining, Devils' goalie Samantha Sigler stretched her body out to bat away the junior's shot from short range.

"We had our opportunities to put the game away in the second half and we didn't make them," Hornets coach Willmer Collier admitted. "But our girls played great; they cleared the ball well, and Culpeper likes to do that line-and-go stuff and our girls did a good job of shutting it down."

Gianniny, a sophomore, totaled eight saves in recording her first shutout of the season.

Brookman had a big assist in the win as well. She smothered a golden scoring opportunity by Culpeper's Stephanie Willett and then broke up a potential 2-on-1 fastbreak by Culepeper's Ellen Craven and Courtney Randolph with 23 minutes remaining.

"I have a lot of confidence having Chelsea behind me and I like the way she yells and tells me where I need to be," said Brookman, who switched from midfield to defense in the middle of last season. "We have a strong defense and I feel like there will be a lot more shutouts to come."

Orange has a home game against Madison tonight, then opens its Jefferson District slate next week with away games at Fluvanna (Monday) and William Monroe (Thursday).

Culpeper plays its next game at Colonial Forge in the squad's Commonwealth District opener on Friday, April 8.
