Foxes slip past Cougars

Despite a strong pitching performance by Mike Lenox, King George scored a run in the top of the fifth inning and went on to win a district game over Courtland, 2-1.

King George's Donald Howell pitched well, allowing one run on five hits while striking out five batters. Donald Howell and Jason Mason had one hit each along with scoring one run each.

Courtland's Lenox allowed two runs on six hits while striking out 12 batters. Alan Welborn scored Courtland's lone run.

King George (10-7, 3-4) will host Caroline Tuesday while Courtland (12-5, 5-2) will be at Chancellor Tuesday.

Brooke Point 10, Culpeper 5

Ryan Wallich, Matt Cavalier and Jordan McNulty each had three hits in visiting Brooke Point's Commonwealth District victory.

Wallich had two RBIs and two runs scored. McNulty hit a two-run home run and had four RBIs.

Will Speights went the distance on the mound for the Black-Hawks (7-9, 4-5), allowing three earned runs while striking out eight batters.

Danny Crane had two hits for the Blue Devils (1-15, 0-8).

Orange 4, Louisa 3

Left fielder Delano Maynard singled home catcher Ryan Harvey in the eighth inning as Orange beat Louisa, 4-3, in an extra-innings Jefferson District game yesterday.

Harvey was 2-for-4 and scored three runs, and Brian Seal was 1-for-2 with two RBIs. His two-run double in the second inning gave Orange (8-9 overall, 3-6 district) a 2-0 lead, but Louisa scored a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead.

Orange will play at Western Albemarle Friday.

Spotsylvania 3, Chancellor 2

Aaron Wheeler (5-0) struck out 10 batters and first baseman Greg Swerda's two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning propelled Spotsylvania to a 3-2 win over Chancellor and helped the Knights extend their winning streak to 12 games.

Aaron Richards was 3-for-3 with two doubles and Steve Johnson was 2-for-3 with a RBI for the Knights.

Seamus Bergen had a double and a RBI for Chancellor.

Spotsylvania is 14-1 overall and 7-0 in district play, and hosts Riverbend at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
