A soldier from Stafford County was among 16 U.S. servicemen killed after a helicopter crashed earlier this week in a rugged mountain ravine in eastern Afghanistan.

The family of Army Master Sgt. Michael L. Russell, 31, a graduate of North Stafford High School, has been notified that he was on the aircraft, according to his father, Lee Russell.

Michael Russell was a member of 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, which is based at Hunter Army Airfield, near Fort Stewart, Ga.

Lee Russell said his son had been deployed to Afghanistan about six times since 9/11. He had received numerous commendations and medals but had not previously been wounded.

Lee Russell said he was traveling to Georgia today to be with his daughter-in-law and two grandchildren. Michael and Annette Russell have two daughters, Lauren, 5 and Meghan, almost 2.

Rescuers reached the crash site today, the Army said.

A military statement said U.S.-led coalition forces were “currently assessing the cause of the crash.

Navy SEALs along with Army air crew from the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, based at Hunter Army Airfield, Ga., and Fort Campbell, Ky., were on board military officials said today.

Militants are believed to have shot down the MH–47 helicopter as it was bringing in reinforcements for a battle with enemy fighters.
