I was dumbfounded when I first read Thomas Johnson's op-ed ["The brutality of war will continue as long as society endorses it," July 13].

How, I wondered, could a professor emeritus of the University of Mary Washington evince such incredible ignorance of and disdain for our military, the society that raised those who serve, and even the world at large?

I started to write a rebuttal, but soon realized that to try to bridge so vast a chasm of academic un-thought would be a waste of time. Besides, it seemed probable that his column was either a bad joke or a poorly conceived attempt to market his little-known book.

Of course, it also occurred to me that one reason the good professor felt comfortable writing such a column, be it a joke, marketing, or otherwise, was because of the sacrifice and success of the same military structure and philosophy (neither of which, it is plain, he understands in the least) he despises.
