Nancy Harris

Nancy Louise Edwards Harris of Alexandria died Monday, Aug. 1, 2005. She was born in King George County, July 15, 1918, while her father served in the U.S. Army in France during World War I.

Mrs. Harris was graduated from the Capital City School of Nursing in Washington, D.C., in 1939, and became a Licensed Registered Professional Nurse in the District. She worked in every hospital in Washington and served in the U.S. Public Health Service.

She was graduated from Catholic University with a double major, psychiatry and administration. She did graduate work in administration at Catholic University, University of Virginia, and the University of Maryland. She was a retired nursing administrator.

She was a member of 65 genealogical societies and has held office, including national office, in many of them. She wrote 99 books on history and genealogy.

Her husband, Foley W. Harris, and a son, Dr. Charles E. Harris and his wife, Zelma, of Pearisburg survive her. She is also survived by her sister, Olive King; a brother, Edgar Edwards and his wife, Patsy, of King George; and brother, George Edwards and his wife, Nancy, of Lake Park, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

A son, Dale, who was an administrator for the Bank of America in San Francisco, preceded Mrs. Harris in death.

A memorial service will be held Monday, Aug. 8, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, 845 N. Howard St., Alexandria. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 124 Park St., S.E., Box 699, Vienna, Va. 22180; or to St. Andrew's United Methodist Church at the above address; or to a favorite charity.

Arrangements were made by Demaine Funeral Home, Springfield. Burial will be in Shiloh Baptist Church cemetery, King George.
