Henry W. Bartlett

Henry William Bartlett, 82, of Newburg, Md., formerly of King George County, died Sunday, Aug. 7, 2005, at his home.

Born Feb. 12, 1923, at Weedonville in King George, he was the son of the late William Henry Bartlett and the late Sarah Jane Staples.

A World War II veteran, Mr. Bartlett served with Company E, 378th Infantry, 95th Division, in the Central European Theater of Operations Rhineland and parti-cipated in the invasion of Germany. After the invasion, he returned to the United States for jungle training in preparation for the war in Japan. Mr. Bartlett's specialty was the M1 Rifle S-166.

Mr. Bartlett was awarded the American Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, EAME Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge.

Upon discharge from active service, he resumed employment with the Department of the Navy at the Naval Proving Ground, Dahlgren. He retired as an ordnance test mechanic from the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division, in December 1984, with 43 years, one month and 13 days of service. He was very proud that during this time of service, he used only 32 hours of sick leave.

He was a member of American Legion Post 89 in King George and enjoyed fishing, hunting and tending to his summer garden.

He is survived by his wife, Leatrice Yates Bartlett; stepchildren, Brenda Yates Korrow and her husband, Rick, and Hassell Edward Yates and his wife, Laurie, all of Newburg; stepgrandson, Thomas Korrow of Honolulu; sisters, Nancy J. Abu Taha of Merritt Island, Fla., and Cora Bishop of King George; sister-in-law, Lorrine Farr of Wayside, Md.; brothers-in-law, Dale Dye and his wife, Pat, of Berlin, Wis., Wendell Dye and his wife, Zelda, of Henderson, Tenn., and Douglas Dye of Waldorf, Md.; nephew, Bob Frere of Waldorf; and other nieces, nephews and relatives.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, at Christ Church Wayside, 13050 Rock Point Road, State Route 257, Newburg, Md. A prayer service will start at 7 p.m.

A funeral will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, with interment to follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Edward Yates, Rick Korrow, Doug Dye, Bob Frere, Jim Frere and Dick Gough.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Church Cemetery Endowment Fund, Box 177, Newburg, Md. 20664; or to Hospice of Charles County Inc., La Plata, Md. 20646.

Arrangements are being handled by Raymond Funeral Service, La Plata.
