Please, ARB, leave Mrs. Buffett's poor roof alone

Date published: 9/27/2005

I was heartbroken and embarrassed to read how the city's Architectural Review Board was handling the issue of the slope of a side-porch roof on the historic home being refurbished by Doris Buffett.

I feel that Mrs. Buffett's painstaking investment in reviving this building is, in itself, an asset to the city--in addition to the benevolence that she has already so generously bestowed on our community.

The building is clearly more attractive because of her efforts, and restoration has preserved its significant historic architectural features, regardless of the slope of the roof on that attachment.

Those who have been entrusted to preserve the city's architectural and historical integrity would do better to focus their efforts a few blocks down Caroline Street, on the blocklike, billowing office building that has long been an eyesore against Fredericksburg's steepled skyline.
