IF YOU COULD create a couple from scratch who love sharing their home's dazzling Christmas display and decorations with family and the community, you couldn't do better than Paul and Sandra Glancy.

That's why the residents of Confederate Ridge in Fredericksburg, who own and operate Paul's Bakery, are this year's winner of my 15th annual Grand Holiday Displays feature.

For those who want to take a look--and you should, it's bright, creative and very festive--the house is at 197 Stonewall Drive.

From U.S. 1, take Confederate Boulevard to a right on Stonewall, veer to the right and spot the bright display on a cul de sac at the end of the street. A friendly sign welcomes you there to "Wonderland."

I met the Glancys at their home yesterday. It's hard to say which is more impressive: the handmade light displays that warm the expansive front yard or the carefully arranged decorations inside the lovely home.

It came as no surprise to learn the Glancys work year-round to plan, build and organize their indoor and outdoor displays.

I'll start with Paul, because it was his outdoor display that won this year's award.

"I didn't really do that much when we lived at another house in Confederate Ridge, because it was hard for anyone to see or get to," said Glancy, whose days making doughnuts, cakes and more begin at 4 a.m. at the bakery on nearby Lafayette Boulevard.

That began to change when they moved five years ago to this home, more accessible and with a large yard perfect for decorating.

Soon enough, Paul moved beyond strings of lights and rope lighting on the house and bushes to light displays in the yard.

"I didn't want to spend a lot of money or buy a bunch of stuff to put in the yard," he said. "I was determined to make what I could and search around for materials to decorate with."

The same ingenuity that he uses to create tasty offerings at his bakery soon enough was evidenced in the yard.
