Crow's Nest backers should consolidate their efforts

Date published: 1/22/2006

I just read Stephen Despres' letter ["Property rights slip away as 'good causes' intrude," Jan. 17], and I applaud his common sense and grasp of right and wrong.

Intrigued, I ran a Google search on "Save Crow's Nest" and found a lot of concerned organizations and individuals.

Generally, all of them support taking away the rights of the owners of Crow's Nest to further their notion of conservation with little or no contribution from those concerned and vocal citizens.

Here's a tip: If you want this to actually occur, you have to lead from the front.

Some organizations accept donations and one has received a significant grant; still others have voiced support while keeping their resources closely held.

I don't trust people calling for someone else's sacrifice to meet their desired goals.

If the people who want to save Crow's Nest really want to save this parcel of land, then why don't they step up to the plate?

They could consolidate their efforts, donate generously, ask for matching conservation organization and government contributions, and pay a fair price.

It appears to me that this cause is important enough for some vocal and well-intentioned citizens to bluster like Ted Kennedy on ethics, but not important enough for any kind of personal financial sacrifice.

It must be easier to sue than to seriously organize, obtain substantial financial backing, and lead from the front.
