Given the current budget environment, I do not envy the Stafford supervisors ["Stafford School Board trims budget," March 22]. Trying to balance the needs of the local government and the school system is not easy. If you were in their place, would you rather: Relieve overcrowding in schools, or save Crow's Nest? Monitor student grades and attendance online, or handle your county business online? Continue to hire and retain good teachers, or provide better emergency services? The supervisors have a lot of hard decisions ahead of them. Oh, wait, the School Board has already made those decisions for them by cutting their own budget. The supervisors may want to keep an eye on the School Board; they are not doing their duty as advocates for the school system. One of them even thinks he is supposed to cut taxes! They are short-changing the school system, the potential for a commercial tax base, and the future of the county. Jay Cooke Stafford
