UNIVERSITY OF MARY Washington students and employees who regularly hunt for on-campus parking spots may have an easier time of it beginning this summer.

A much-anticipated parking garage, with 440 spaces, is scheduled to open at the end of July, said Rick Hurley, the university's chief financial officer.

The deck is located at the corner of U.S. 1 and Alvey Street. Construction was completed last week, he said.

"If you go by it today, it looks done," Hurley said. "All the pieces have been assembled."

But welding, caulking, and running lines for lights, elevators and phones in the structure will take until July.

The parking spaces will be designated for commuters and a small number for employees.

The total cost of the project is $6 million; around $5.2 million paid for the construction of the deck. The remaining $800,000 was used to hire a project manager, cover inspection fees and buy equipment to clean the deck, Hurley said.

The construction was funded by a parking decal fee all students are charged if they plan to have a car on campus. This year's fee was $150, Hurley said. Next year it will go up to $200.

The university had to borrow the $6 million for the construction. The collected decal fees pay for the mortgage payment on the note, he said, which is about $460,000 per year.

"The state of Virginia does not provide any taxpayer support for parking-related construction or facilities," Hurley said.

The project will be completed within budget and on time. Hurley said.

Todor Dossev, of Desman Associates, is the project manager. Donley's Inc., of Cleveland, Ohio, is the construction firm.
