Outdoor calendar

Through May 13: Spring gobbler season. Legal hunting one-half hour before sunrise to sunset.

June 3: Kids Fishing Derby at Motts Run Reservoir, Registration 7:30-10:30 a.m. Fishing from 9 a.m.-noon. Free to kids age 4-16 and no license required. Bring own fishing gear and bait and food and drink. Sponsors & volunteers needed. Call 372-1086, Ext. 213. Rain date is June 4.

June 3: Friends of the NRA fund raising banquet, Eagles Lodge and Cool Springs Road, Stafford County. Live and silent auctions, raffles and door prizes. Program raises funds for grants to organizations promoting gun safety programs, shooting ranges, local 4H clubs and others. Get tickets at "Combat Solution" gun shop on Route 3 East across from Ferry Farm or contact Bruce Wincentsen at 659-5372.

May 6: Earl's Bassin' Trail Tournaments. Call Earl Cooper at 804/633-9247 for more information. Later tournament dates include: July 29 and Sept. 9: Rappahannock River at Hicks Landing; May 27: Pamunkey River at William's Landing; June 10 and Aug. 12: Potomac River at Hope Springs.

May 21: National Bass Circuit /Lake Anna Division Open Team/Individual Bass Tournaments. $160 Entry. 7 a.m.-3 pm. 7 a.m.-3 p.m. $260 Entry. 80 percent payback. Two lunker pots. Launch from Sturgeon Creek Marina. Tournament Director Dave Fauntleroy, 540/840-6772.

May 12 & 26, June 9 & 23, July 7 & 21, Aug. 11 & 25, Sept. 8 & 22: Motts Reservoir night catfishing, 8:30 p.m.-1 a.m. Advance prices: adults, $3; kids 10-16, $1. Event day prices: adults, $5, kids, $3. Only boats properly rigged with lights allowed. Call Don Minor at 786-8989.

May 13: Anna Point Marina's Annual Kids Fishing Derby. 8 a.m.-- noon. Two age groups: 6-12 and 13-15. $10/child entry fee (includes snack bag and lunch). Trophies for largest fish in each division and age group. Divisions are bass, crappie, catfish and sunfish. Grand Champion trophy awarded to angler with "most significant fish" based on percentage of citation weight. Designed as a "fun event" with prizes or certificates for all entrants.
