Fauquier County school chief J. David Martin has been named Virginia Superintendent of the Year.

Martin's selection was announced at the Virginia Association of School Superintendents' annual conference in Roanoke Tuesday.

The recipient of the award is determined by the president of the State Board of Education, the acting state superintendent of public education and the presidents of four major educational organizations.

"David assists his staff with balancing the needs of the students who perform below standard with the needs of those who perform above by emphasizing high expectations for the low achievers and stretching the top for the high achievers," VASS President Margaret Blackmon said in presenting the award.

Martin, a Culpeper native, has been Fauquier County's superintendent since 2001. Before assuming his present position, the 30-year education veteran served as superintendent with the Williamsburg-James City, Henry County and Manassas Park school divisions.

He began his career as a special education teacher in Winchester.

Martin is a graduate of James Madison University with a master's degree from West Virginia and a doctorate from Virginia Tech.

He now serves as an adjunct professor at Shenandoah University and is executive superintendent of the new Mountain Vista Governor's School.

Martin, representing Region IV, was selected from eight state regional superintendents of the year. He now becomes eligible for the national Superintendent of the Year award to be presented in New Orleans next March.
