James E. Spicer

James Elliott Spicer Sr., 55, of Potomac, Md., formerly of Fredericksburg, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2006.

He was born Oct. 19, 1950, in Gauley Bridge, W.Va. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carlton R. Spicer Sr. and Grace Spicer, along with two sisters, Betty Kania and Doris Waldeck.

He is survived by his wife, Marie Howland of Potomac; his children, James E. Spicer Jr., Scott Spicer and his wife, Meri Katharine, and Amber Potter and her husband, Matthew, all of Fredericksburg; stepsons, Matthew and Colin Waddleworth, both of Potomac; two sisters, JoAnn S. Vincent of Stafford County and Marita Reed and her husband, Thomas, of Kent Island, Md.; two brothers, Carlton Spicer and his wife, Rebekah, and Stephen Spicer and his wife, Carole, both of Fredericksburg; and two brothers-in-law, Louis Kania of Gauley Bridge, W.Va., and James Waldeck of Huntington, W.Va.

Jim attended Faith United Methodist Church in Potomac and Fairview Baptist Church in Fredericksburg.

He was the owner of Homecraft of America and was a kitchen designer for Bray and Scarff. Jim also spent several years as a teacher and basketball coach in West Virginia and Virginia. During his years of coaching, he served as head basketball coach at Salem College in Salem, W.Va. He enjoyed life with his family and was an avid outdoorsman, who loved hunting and fishing.

A celebration of his life will be held at Fairview Baptist Church in Fredericksburg on Thursday, June 1, at 1 p.m. Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Ansted, W.Va., at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 3.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Kanawha Valley Chapter, Trout Unlimited, 5225 Nesting Way, Cross Lanes, W.Va. 25313.

Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel, is handling the arrangements.
