Ukrop's Supermarkets helped the brand-new Spotsylvania Education Foundation get off to a good start Wednesday night.

Spotsylvania County School officials introduced the foundation at a banquet held at Riverbend High School. Nearly 200 people attended.

Ukrop's Director of Retail Operations Jim Blackwell presented the foundation with a $50,000 donation over the next five years at the event.

Blackwell is also a charter member of the foundation.

Superintendent Jerry Hill described the foundation's focus in a letter distributed to community members in advance of the banquet.

"This exciting project is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization whose only purpose is to raise money to strengthen the quality of instructional programs in Spotsylvania County Public Schools," Hill wrote.

The foundation has 16 members on its board of directors, which is comprised of school officials and community members. The board will meet later in June to elect officers.

In addition to celebrating the foundation's establishment, 29 county teachers of the year were recognized at the Wednesday night event.

Tina Cook, a Computer Science teacher at Thornburg Middle School, was named 2005-06 Division Teacher of the Year.
