Samuel T. Long and Shelby C. Fields are Colonial Beach High School's valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, for 2006.
Long, 18, is the son of Mike and Judy Long and a lifelong resident of Colonial Beach. Throughout high school, Sam has participated in numerous school clubs and activities, including membership in the National Honor Society, DECA, FBLA, the Gifted and Talented Program, and the Scholar to Scholar Program.
Sam graduates with a GPA of 4.05, scoring 1,800 on his SATs and 29 on his ACT. As a participant in the Early College Scholars Program, he has earned 16 college credits through dual enrollment and AP courses. Sam has attended several enrichment and leadership programs, including the Ferrum College Summer Enrichment Program and the "Lead America" Student Leadership Conference in Washington. Last year, he was awarded the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants 2005 Award of Achievement and worked as an apprentice in the Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program at Dahlgren.
Sam has been a member of the Colonial Beach Drifter baseball and basketball teams since the ninth grade and received the Team Athletic Academic Award in both sports for each of those years. He was especially proud to be a part of this year's varsity baseball team, as they finished their season as the Delaney Athletic Conference Champions.
This fall, Sam will attend the University of Virginia, where he plans to major in international business with a minor in foreign language.
Shelby C. Fields has attended Colonial Beach schools since kindergarten. She is the daughter of Nelson and Laura Fields of Colonial Beach and the granddaughter of Earle and Mary Payne. Shelby has two brothers, Thomas and Russell.
Shelby has been a member of the Student Council Association, the National Junior Honor Society, and National Honor Society, Scholar to Scholar program as well as the National Technical Honor Society. She is an Early College Scholar through dual enrollment and advanced placement courses she took during high school.
Shelby has always been an outstanding student and has made academics her priority. In addition to maintaining a 3.95 GPA, throughout high school she has worked at the 21st Century Community Learning Center. There, she tutors students and assists teachers.
She has attended Oak Grove Baptist Church since birth. She has worked with children's Sunday school and Bible school and helped with numerous other activities.
This fall, Shelby will attend the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech, where she will major in business management.
