Spotsylvania County deputy seriously hurt while on duty Wednesday afternoon. Date published: 7/14/2006
A Spotsylvania County sheriff's deputy was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon when his patrol motorcycle collided with a pickup truck, authorities said.
Deputy Tibor Kreiter, 40, was on patrol in the 9000 block of Brock Road when a pickup truck pulled out of a driveway in front of him about 4:40 p.m., said Spotsylvania Sheriff Howard Smith. Smith said Kreiter had no chance to brake or swerve, and the deputy's motorcycle hit the truck on the driver's side. Both vehicles were totaled. Kreiter was flown to the VCU Medical Center in Richmond, where he underwent emergency surgery Wednesday. The driver of the pickup wasn't hurt. Kreiter suffered a compound fracture of his left arm between the elbow and wrist; the arm was broken in four places. Kreiter also broke his right collarbone, right hip and right leg, Smith said. He had significant injuries to his mouth area, as well as a concussion. The injuries are not considered life-threatening, Smith said. Kreiter is able to talk and does not remember the wreck. He faces a long rehabilitation but is expected to recover. Kreiter is married with young children and lives in Spotsylvania, Smith said. He has worked for the Sheriff's Office for two years. He has medical insurance through the county. Kreiter was involved in saving 3-year-old Dakota Murphy in January after the boy was mauled by a Rottweiler in his neighbor's yard in The Timbers subdivision. Kreiter and Spotsylvania Deputy Delbert Myrick II found the boy in the yard and got him out. Smith said authorities are wrapping up an investigation into the traffic wreck. The truck's driver is expected to face charges including failing to yield the right of way, driving on a suspended license and driving without insurance. The driver's name has not yet been released. Witnesses said that excessive speed was not a factor in the wreck, Smith said. Kreiter slowed down shortly before the wreck when another vehicle made a turn in front of him without incident.
