The Fredericksburg Falcons kick off their 2006 Mason-Dixon Football Conference with a home game tomorrow night against the Winchester Tigers.

The contest will be played at Colonial Beach High School. Kickoff is at 7:30.

The MDFC has six other games on tap to open its 29th season of play: Arbutus (Md.) Big Red at the Prince William Monarchs, defending champion Virginia Ravens at Aquinas Crusaders, Fayetteville (N.C.) Ruff Riders at New Bern, Wilmington at Goldsboro (N.C.) BullDawgs, and the Carolina (N.C.) Heat at Hill City Storm.

The Jacksonville (N.C.) Raiders have a first-week bye.

Tickets are priced at $6 for adults, $3 for youngsters age 12-19 and children 11-and-under are admitted free.

Rising senior Curtis Lazar of Mountain View High School has been invited by the Chicago White Sox to participate in next month's Area Code Games being played at Long Beach, Calif., and featuring some of the top high school baseball talent in the country.

Lazar, who normally plays first base, was selected through recommendations made by pro scouts. Roughly 300 players have been invited to participate in the event, which begins Aug. 4.

Area golfers will be shooting for a trip to Florida while benefiting a worthy cause in this summer's third annual Jack Nicklaus Heart and Stroke Challenge.

Two-person teams are being offered a chance to play either Cannon Ridge Golf Club or Lee's Hill Golfers' Club any day of the week through the month of July. There is no charge to enter the tournament, but greens fees will still apply. Persons may play as many times as they like and with different partners. In addition, they have the option of purchasing a $10 mulligan, reducing by one stroke their better-ball score (each golfer plays his own ball from start to finish).

Team scores from participating course are submitted to the Middle Atlantic regional office. The twosome with the lowest score (cards are matched to break ties) gains one of seven invitations to participate in national finals to be played at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., later this year.

Last year's event raised nearly $80,000 for the benefit of the Larry King Cardiac Foundation.
