Inmates cleaning up litter on Stafford roadsides

Jail inmates are helping pick up litter around Stafford County

Date published: 7/18/2006

Tobi Aronoff doesn't like seeing litter. That's why she picks up candy wrappers, cans and other pieces of trash she sees in and around shopping centers or the courthouse.

"I don't see why people can't take the time to throw stuff away," she said.

Well, Aronoff is getting a little help. For the past few months, inmates at the Rappahannock Regional Jail have been scouring the county, picking up discarded trash to the tune of 14,000 pounds since March.

"The litter crews are a positive presence in the community," said Sgt. James Schmitz, head of the jail's work-release program. "These individuals do a hard job really well, especially in the hot summer months."

Several months ago, the Rappahannock Solid Waste Management Board and the jail teamed up to get rid of trash along the roadways.

"The project decreases the amount of unsightly litter and helps create a sense of pride in our community," said Diane Jones, coordinator for the landfill's recycling and litter-prevention programs.

Jail officials have been selecting inmates to work on the crews, which are made up of six to 10 people. The crews are supervised by jail guards.

Cathy Riddle, county spokeswoman, said the R-Board is paying about $60,000 for the guards' work and equipment, including vests and garbage bags.

Right now it's a pilot program, but Schmitz said it's likely to become permanent.

Riddle said that until this program was launched, the county had no official effort to rid the area of litter.

"We had organizations that volunteered to clean up a roadway or area, but nobody was doing it on a regular basis," she said.

"Well, it's about time," said Aronoff, who lives in an apartment in North Stafford. "People just think they can throw stuff anywhere."

Good job! (posted by boscia , Sep. 25, 2007 2:41 pm)
I am glad to see that we are utilizing those who can help. I travel I-95 every day and hate to cross over into Stafford county to see trash all over. This will help us feel proud of our county! Now if we can just get someone to adjust the HOV lane times to start at 5:30 am instead of 6:00 - then I will be completely satisfied to be living in Stafford county!
