Guilty plea in beating

Woodbridge man pleads guilty to brutal assault on Spotsylvania County girl.

Date published: 7/18/2006

By BILL FREEHLING

A Woodbridge man pleaded guilty yesterday to a brutal attack on a teenage girl last year in Spotsylvania County.

The Aug. 16, 2005, attack severely injured the left eye of 16-year-old Spotsylvania girl Rebecca McDonald, who has undergone three surgeries but is still having problems with her vision.

Jose Domingo Ramirez, 29, pleaded guilty yesterday in Spotsylvania Circuit Court to one count each of aggravated malicious wounding and abduction.

Ramirez faces the possibility of life in prison for the aggravated assault. His sentencing hearing has been set for Oct. 6, and Spotsylvania prosecutor Stuart Sullivan said he intends to seek "the harshest of punishments" for the unprovoked attack.

According to prosecution evidence, the girl, who was 15 at the time, left her home in the Olde Greenwich subdivision about 6:30 p.m. last Aug. 16. She planned to walk to a friend's nearby home.

As she walked through the neighborhood, Rebecca saw Ramirez doing repair work on an unoccupied town home. Ramirez, whom she had never seen before, called out "mamacita" to her.

According to several Web sites, "mamacita" is a Spanish word that can be used by men to tell a girl that she is pretty.

The girl ignored the catcall and walked on toward her friend's house. Rebecca heard footsteps behind her and turned to see Ramirez. He began speaking to her in Spanish and grabbed her after a few moments. Ramirez then pulled her down a hill.

Rebecca scratched Ramirez's arms and face and screamed for help, according to prosecution evidence. Ramirez held her face down in a small stream, released her briefly, picked up a large rock from the stream and smashed her in the left side of her face with the rock as she lay in the water.

James Snyder, a resident of Olde Greenwich and a history teacher at James Monroe High School in Fredericksburg, heard the screams and saw the man strike Rebecca with the rock. Snyder yelled at Ramirez, who ran into the woods, according to the evidence. Snyder ran to help the girl, whose face was badly swollen and covered in blood. She was rushed to Mary Washington Hospital.

Doctors determined that Rebecca's left eye socket had been shattered, and that the ligaments holding her eye in place had been severely damaged. She has undergone three operations, but her left eye still doesn't rest in its proper place, and her eyesight is still impaired. Additional surgery is possible, Sullivan said.

Rebecca still does not understand why Ramirez attacked her, according to prosecution evidence. Sullivan called Rebecca a "wholly innocent victim."

Illegal or not (posted by wlw , Sep. 25, 2007 2:41 pm)
I am in total support of sending this man to jail but if he is here illegally, send him back to his homeland to serve time in prison. I don't want my hard earned tax dollars to pay for yet another free service (food, education, shelter,etc..., while in prison) for an illegal immigrants.

I just hope that there is follow up on this case in the Free Lance Star. I would like to see not only what this animal receives for punishment but the actual time he does and how soon he is let out. Since I believe he is illegal, when he is let out is he let out on our streets or to the old joke of deportation? Also why the charge of malicious wounding and why not attempted murder?

Is he an illegal? (posted by von , Sep. 25, 2007 2:41 pm)
I'm curious about this mans past history. Where does he come from. Does he have any prior convictions, or a police record for this type of attacks on others? Is he in this coutry legally?

What is wrong with these people in our area?!!!!!!! This one too needs to be sent to prison - a hard prison where he suffers just like he did to this little girl. God Bless Mr. Snyder for assisting her...
