Sorry, but I don't believe walking trails are so safe

Dave Fedorchak's recent op-ed was something to read ["Critics of the King George rail-trail have offered no real evidence," July 6].

Mr. Fedorchak used 10-year-old data and a study that the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy paid for to state his case.

The crime rate has increased in the past 10 years. My sister was attacked on the B&A trail in Glen Burnie, Md. This is not an "exaggerated claim or wild histrionics," but a fact.

How many times have we heard the police on the news tell people, "Do not use the trails by yourself, use the buddy system"? That is a fact.

I believe that at his grand opening, David Brickley passed out a flier that said: "Don't walk by yourself. Walk in groups or with a buddy." Why? Because even he knows it is not safe to walk on a trail in the woods by yourself.

Any police officer will tell you that.
