Stafford's Scott Reed captures masters rally title in Akron. Date published: 7/25/2006
By JENN ROWELL Stafford High School student Scott Reed brought home the area's first-ever world championship trophy from the All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio. His 28.59-second roll down the rain-slick lane gave the 16-year-old Reed the title for the masters rally division on Saturday. "It's unbelievable," he said yesterday, back at home in Stafford County. "I couldn't believe this would ever happen." His six years of racing have paid off his mom, Carol, said. "I just wanted to win one," she said. And on Saturday, she got her wish. "He just kept winning and winning and it was awesome," she said. Reed's dad, Jerry, felt the same way. "It puts you on top of the world," he said. As a rally racer, Scott Reed has traveled to Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia in the past year to gain points to qualify for the All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron. "It takes a lot of time and money," Reed said. But since the races happen only on Saturdays, it doesn't interfere with his school work too much, he said. He raced the same car for all the rallies and in Akron. The car was, sponsored by R.C. Lee's Carpet One, where Reed's father works. After winning, Scott got out of the car and did an interview with ESPN, which also aired the race that day. This was the first year the sports cable channel had broadcast the derby. Later, he went to the award ceremony held for the champions, he said. Reed was in Lane 3 when he won and said he was focused on keeping his car straight. The rainy weather caused some drivers trouble on Saturday, but it was just a nuisance for Reed. "Rain was coming off the wheels, and it was coming into my eyes," he said. Reed's younger sisters are also soap box derby racers. Jennifer, 13, won in the Rappahannock Regional Soap Box Derby, The Free Lance-Star Classic in 2004 for the stock division and went on to place third in Akron. His other sister, Megan, was a finalist in the local race in the stock division. Saturday was probably Scott Reed's last race. "He's going out on top," Scott's dad said. "Which is what he wanted to do." To reach JENN ROWELL:
We were in Akron and watched Scott all the way to the end. It was great to have Fredericksburg recognized for so many things in Akron.... the largest local race in the world and now a world champion! Great job Scott!
