Loar gets back his 9-ball title

Loar scrambles to regain title

Focusing more on work and family and less on play did not dull Chris Loar's skill with a pool stick.

Playing in just his fourth tournament in two years, the 29-year-old Fredericksburg resident topped a 64-player field to win the Virginia state 9-ball championships last weekend in Richmond.

"They were both tough," Loar said in comparing this year's crown to the one he won in 2004. "It feels good because I didn't know how I would do. I haven't play a lot [recently]."

The victory in the double-elimination tournament brought the Courtland High School graduate $900 as well as a free entry to the U.S. Open championship scheduled at Chesapeake in September.

After finishing 17th at nationals, Loar did not compete in last year's state tournament to be with his wife, Erin, for the birth of their daughter Lindsey.

"Family is definitely more important than pool," the owner of J.J.'s Billiards (on Lafayette Boulevard) said. "And it means less pressure when you just go."

Last weekend's competition did provide a degree of dramatic tension, though. Loar overcame a 6-0 game deficit to down 16-year-old Chris Futrell of Virginia, in the quarterfinals.

Then using an extended-race format in the finals, Loar jumped out to a 10-4 lead over Eric Moore, then saw the lead trimmed to 10-7 before capturing the next game to avenge an earlier defeat.

Loar is planning to participate in the national tournament, but if he doesn't, you will know the reason why.

Clinic attracts Brazilians

Fifteen former pro soccer players from Brazil will share their playing skill and religious faith during a free youth soccer clinic scheduled next Monday and Tuesday at Dixon Park in Fredericksburg.

Boys and girls age 8-18 of all skill levels are eligible to attend. They may pre-register at ever green4u.org or just show up.

Hours are 5-8 p.m. each day. The park is located off State Route 2 next to the new city pool.

On Sunday night, the Brazilians will be taking on two local adult teams in an indoor exhibition at 9 and 10 p.m. at Fredericksburg Field House. The Field House will provide an all-star team for one match, while local club FC Spotsylvania will supply the other.
