Our late son's friend is blameless in his untimely death

Date published: 8/7/2006

There was a report in the newspaper recently about a fatal automobile accident that included our son, Chapman Slye ["Spotsy teen dies in crash," July 6].

Unfortunately, some incorrect information was given to The Free Lance-Star about the driver of the vehicle, Kenny Hazzard, who was taking our son, Chapman, to Virginia Beach.

The report indicated that Kenny was under the influence of alcohol, and that was not the case. He was completely alert, and a mistake was made in recording his blood alcohol level.

It is very important to our family and Kenny's that his reputation reflect that he was simply doing a kind deed by driving Chapman to be with his family.

Kenny Hazzard is a bright young man and an exemplary citizen of this community.

He was captain of the basketball team his senior year at Massaponax High School, and he's truly loved by his family, friends, and peers.

This fall, he is returning to Lynchburg College to continue his studies to earn a degree in engineering.

We appreciate this opportunity to set the record straight and preserve this young man's reputation.
