'Danger' of walking trails has been overstated

Date published: 8/7/2006

A recent letter commented on the safety of trails and specifically the Dahlgren Railroad Heritage Trail ["Sorry, but I don't believe walking trails are so safe," July 24].

Studies have shown that trails, including rails-to-trails projects, are as safe as the surrounding areas.

No one claims they are 100 percent "safe," any more than the parking lot at your local supermarket or your neighborhood playground is "100 percent safe."

But those who suggest that there is a special element of hazard to rails-to-trails projects, and the proposed Dahlgren trail in particular, should provide studies and data to support their claims.

Single data points or anecdotes (sometimes referred to as "red herrings") prove nothing and should not serve as a basis for policy decisions.

Given the increasing need for exercise and alternate transportation opportunities, the Dahlgren trail will be a great asset for King George and the region.
