'Plan B' kills, so it's nothing to cheer about

The letter from Ann O'Hanlon, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia, will not draw cheers from the pro-life community ["Plan B should draw pro-life cheers," Aug. 14].

We could never, as Ms. O'Hanlon suggests, "embrace" Plan B, the "morning-after pill."

The reason is very simple. If fertilization has occurred (i.e., the sperm and egg have joined), the pill will prevent the implantation of the fertilized egg in the uterus.

This spells death for the new human life, a living soul, that was just begun.

The high dosage of hormones in the pill acts to terminate a viable pregnancy by creating a hostile uterine environment. The woman's body rejects the tiny, living human being. The result is a chemical abortion.

The God-given miracle of life truly begins at fertilization, where all the characteristics of each person--sex, eye color, shoe size, etc.--are determined by the baby's genetic code in the 46 chromosomes, 23 from the sperm and 23 from the egg.

The fertilization of an egg can occur as early as 15 minutes after intercourse, and then it begins the journey down the fallopian tube into the prepared uterus.

Each of our lives started as this separate single cell; nothing new is added but oxygen and nutrition.

In addition to ending the life of a tiny human being, there are also health risks for the mother.

Public beware! Don't be fooled by the pro-choice marketing rhetoric of a benign little pill.
