Hull ready to sparkle for Golden Flashes

September 6, 2006 12:50 am

MOP-UP TIME RARELY attracts any attention from spectators or the sports media, but for those players involved--whether they be on the winning or losing side--it is a chance to attract some coach's attention and perhaps earn a little respect from the opposition as well.

Freshman lineman Aaron Hull (Liberty) made a favorable impression after being sent into the fourth quarter of last week's football opener between Kent State and the University of Minnesota.

Although the Golden Flashes were trailing 38-0 at that stage, the 6-foot, 265-pounder made the most of his collegiate debut, registering four solo tackles.

And while Hull's playing time figures to be limited in the foreseeable future, the former Liberty High School standout may have laid the foundation for greater playing time sometime in the future.

Hull seems to have righted his athletic career after it was nearly derailed by a serious car accident. The athletic scholarship he was initially offered by Temple University was withdrawn, then after contemplating going to a junior college out west, liked what he saw during a visit to the Ohio campus.

Hull is presently listed third on the Kent State depth chart at defensive tackle due to the team's considerable depth on the line.

For now, Hull must be content to perform well when the opportunity presents itself. There are a couple of intriguing dates on the Flashes' slate this season, including visits to Temple on Oct. 7 and to Virginia Tech on Nov. 14.

Another Kent State defender waiting his chance to showcase his skills is defensive back Jarvis Williams (North Stafford) who was a key member of the Wolverines football team that reached the Group AAA Virginia state finals in 2004.

Williams hoped to make his presence felt after being red-shirted last year, but currently is sidelined with a shoulder injury.

The Flashes play at Army this weekend.

Strong finish lifts U.Va.-Wise

The University of Virginia's College of Wise football team scored a pair of touchdowns in the final 48 seconds of play to defeat North Greenville, 48-35.

Sophomore quarterback Randy Hippeard (Colonial Forge) turned in his second stellar effort of the young season, completing 25 of 35 pass attempts for 288 yards and one touchdown. He also ran 1 yard for another score.

Teammate Ray Damm (Stafford) converted six-of-seven PAT attempts.

The 2-0 Highland Cavaliers are idle this week, before swinging into their NAIA competition with next week's game against Southern Virginia.

Warlick paces Hornets

Outside hitter Katie Warlick (Colonial Forge) had a team-high 41 kills to go along with 10 digs, five blocked shots and five service aces as the Lynchburg College women's volleyball team opened the season with a 1-3 record at the Averett University tournament.

Catawba women romp

Enjoying a 26-7 shot advantage, the Catawba field hockey team opened its season with a 6-1 victory over Bridgewater.

Junior goalie Megan McCullough (Courtland) registered three saves for the victory. Also in the Indians' starting lineup is midfielder Jackie Jenkins (Culpeper).

Catawba plays at Millersville tomorrow, then competes in a three-game tournament at Kutztown this weekend.

Colonials have the Powers

Tight end Jarvis Powers (Brooke Point) hauled in a 16-yard touchdown pass and was one of the offensive standouts for the Robert Morris football team in its season-opening loss to Dayton. The senior led the Colonials in receiving with 79 yards on five catches.

League tabs UMW goalie

Mary Washington senior goalie Kate Brown (Charlottesville) was selected the Capital Athletic Conference field hockey player of the week following her 20-save effort in a losing cause against Lebanon Valley (2-0).
