Vincent Kooijman's penalty kick in the 60th minute gave the University of Mary Washington's men's soccer team the lead for good as the Eagles won a 3-2 seesaw battle with Salisbury University at the Battleground Complex yesterday.
The Eagles responded to Sea Gulls' scores with goals from Tommy DiNuzzo and Tommy Park before Kooijman's go-ahead score. From there, the UMW defense took over, with senior goaltender Elliott Jones making four major saves, including a diving stop of a header by Salisbury's Dave Kroening in the closing minutes.
The homecoming win was the UMW's first against Salisbury in six matches, dating back to 2002. The Eagles (9-2, 4-0 Capital Athletic Conference) will host Hood College in another CAC contest Tuesday at 4 p.m.
WOMEN'S SOCCERThe Eagles struggled to manufacture shots on goal at visiting Salisbury yesterday at the Battleground.
The Sea Gulls, in turn, had better success. Though they managed only eight shots on goal to the Eagles three, scores by Robyn Bishop and Kate Weaver were enough to give Salisbury the conference victory.
Mary Washington (4-8-1, 3-3) in will visit Chowan College on Thursday at 4 p.m.
WOMEN'S TENNISThe Eagles Kate Malpeli and Stacey Rickard advanced to the finals of the Virginia Tech Hokie Invitational.
Malpeli defeated Katie Bouret of Washington & Lee, 6-2, 6-1, and Rickard downed Rebecca Siron of Radford, 6-3, 7-5, and Tori Christmas of W&L, 6-2, 6-2.
UMW's Stephanie Kurti and Becky Morse-Karzen defeated Cramp and James of Virginia Tech before falling in semifinal action in doubles.
The event will continue today in Blacksburg.
