Eagles open with relay win

The University of Mary Washington men's swim team won the 300-yard breast stroke relay last night at the season-opening Potomac Valley Relays in Washington.

Competing against Division I teams, UMW's Dale Parker, Drew Taccone, and Kennard Smith were timed in 3:04.27.

The Eagle men also took second place in the 400 individual medley relay and third in the 200 free and 200 medley relays.

UMW's women were second in the 400 IM relay and 300 butterfly relay. The 200 medley relay, 200 free relay, and 300 back relay teams all took third place.

The Eagles will return to action Oct. 21 at William & Mary.

Men's tennis

UMW sophomore John James defeated second-seeded Jesse Brauer of Gustavus Adolphus, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 yesterday in the consolation round of the ITA Small College National Tennis Championships yesterday in Fort Myers, Fla.

James will face Phalkun Mam of Whitman College today in the fifth place match.

Volleyball

UMW's scheduled match against Randolph-Macon College last night was canceled when no officials showed up.
