A pilot was killed yesterday evening when a single-engine, single-seat experimental airplane crashed at Shannon Airport in Spotsylvania County.

The pilot was a male, according to Walter Snellings, a death investigator with the state medical examiner. State police would not confirm any fatalities.

"From the preliminary investigation, it appears the plane was making touch-and-go landings and veered to the the southwest side of the runway and into a field," said Sgt. F.L. Tyler, who is with the Virginia State Police.

The mishap occurred at 5:55.

Tyler said police will release more information today. The National Transportation Safety Board is expected to investigate the crash.
