York tops Eagles, grabs top seed for CAC tournament

Third-ranked York College used a goal by Andrew Wheeler in the 50th minute to defeat the 25th- ranked University of Mary Washington men's soccer team yesterday to claim the top seed in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament next week.

Mary Washington had 12 shots to 10 for York, and outkicked the Spartans, 7-2, on corner kicks, but were unable to score.

T he Eagles (11-3), ranked third in the South region, will host Christopher Newport University on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Eighth-ranked College of New Jersey opened up a 2-0 halftime lead, and rolled for seven second-half goals in a 9-0 win over the Eagles yesterday

The Lions outshot the Eagles, 34-3, and had seven corner kicks to none for UMW.

The Eagles (5-9-1) will close the regular season at Catholic University Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

FIELD HOCKEY

Sixth-ranked Salisbury (Md.) University exploded for nine second-half goals to defeat the Eagles 11-1 in Salisbury yesterday.

The Eagles (10-6, 4-2 CAC) will visit Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

CROSS COUNTRY

The depleted Eagle cross country teams posted modest results in the Elizabethtown College Invitational in Elizabethtown, Pa., yesterday.

With several members held out for the upcoming Capital Athletic Conference championships, the Eagles fared as best they could. The men finished in seventh place in he 6K race, with freshman Frank DeVar finishing in a team-best 17th place at 20:01. He was foillowed by George Winslow (20:59), and Jake Pattyson (21:04).

Ann Tripp led the women, finishing in 13th place with a time of 15:37. Cristy Falcone finished behind her in 15th place at 15:41.

The CAC championships will be held in Salisbury, Md., in two weeks.

SWIMMING

The University of Mary Washington men's and women's swim teams fell to William & Mary yesterday in the Eagles' first dual meet of the year. The men lost 127-71, while the women fell 126-76.

The women fared best in the 50 freestyle, in which Maureen Greenlee finished second (25.30), Kristen LaCoe third (25.66), and Amy Carlson fourth (25.74). Tricia Dilger placed third in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:30.49.

For the men, Luke Moss was third in both the 200 backstroke (2:00.45) and the 200 IM (2:05.49).

The Eagles will return to action in a tri-meet at Gallaudet University with Salisbury University Oct. 28 at 1 p.m.
