Beyond ghosts: last-minute costume ideas

Date published: 10/31/2006

By FLOWERS UMBLE Did Halloween sneak up on you? Did you wake up today without a costume?

You could throw a white sheet over your head and cut two circles for eyes, but hasn't that been done enough?

Here are 10 ideas for kids to wear trick-or-treating or adults to don for parties:

Ideas came from the following Web sites: southern maryland online (somd.com), costumeideazone.com and familyfun.go.com

Deviled Egg: Dress in all white and paint or attach a yellow circle to your stomach. Then wear devil horns and carry a pitchfork.

Ceiling Fan: Write "Go Ceilings!" on the front of your shirt.

White Trash: Wear all white, and attach trash (milk cartons, paper, candy wrappers) to your clothes yourself.

Chia Pet: Wrap yourself in duct tape so the sticky part is facing out, then roll around on the lawn.

Smarty pants: Attach rolls of Smarties candies to pants using clear packing tape.

Mummy: Wrap yourself in toilet paper or white crepe paper. To make it more personal, print out a King Tut mask from familyfun.go.com.

Black-eyed Peas: Use black face paint to paint two black peas around each eye. Alternative: attach a large "P" to your shirt and draw a black circle around one eye.

Gypsy: Wear many layers of loose clothes, pile on costume jewelry. Top off with a head scarf and some big hoop earrings.

Static Cling: Take a black sweat suit and pin socks, a little towel, a dryer sheet, etc. to it. Mousse and spray your hair to stand on end.

Bunch of Grapes: Blow up small round purple or green balloons to about six inches in diameter. Dress in either purple or green. If you don't have purple or green sweats handy, wear a neutral color like black, brown or grey. Use safety pins to attach the balloons to the clothing.
