Sandra White
Sandra R. "Sandy" White, 58, a professor and reading program coordinator at the University of Virginia, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, of pancreatic cancer at her home in Alexandria. Dr. White was born in Barron, Wis. After receiving a degree in elementary education from the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire, she taught for four years. She attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison to pursue a master's degree and remained there after graduation, conducting research studies on reading instruction. In 1981, she moved to Nagasaki, Japan, and spent two years teaching English as a foreign language at the Kwassui Girls' School. She also began her love of overseas travel. After returning to the States, she completed her doctorate at UW at Madison in curriculum and instruction, with an emphasis in reading. Dr. White relocated to Virginia in 1987 and began teaching for the Fairfax County school system. Between 1989 and 2003, she taught at Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg and was chair of the education department from 1998 to 2001. She published numerous articles for professional journals and co-authored a book. She was a member of several professional education associations. An avid runner and bicycle enthusiast, she and her husband spent weekends enjoying the bike paths along the Potomac. They had recently purchased a home in Wilmington, N.C., where they continued to enjoy biking, jogging, kayaking and the beach. Survivors include her husband, William Cobb of Alexandria; her mother, Doris White of Barron, Wis.; and a brother, Gary White of Fond du Lac, Wis. There will be a memorial service at Olivet Episcopal Church, 6107 Franconia Road, Alexandria, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dr. White's name to The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia, 2855 Annandale Road, Falls Church, Va. 22042; or to an education scholarship at the University of Mary Washington, c/o Univerity of Mary Washington Foundation, Attn: Venitta McCall, Box 1908, College Station, Fredericksburg, Va. 22402.
