Van J. Abbott
Van J. Abbott of Woodbridge died Friday, Dec. 29, 2006. He was born Aug. 17, 1945, in Victoria, Texas.
Survivors include his wife, Susan J. Abbott of Woodbridge, a daughter, Brenda Abbott of Manassas; two sisters, Fay Eilers and Jane Plunkett, both of Victoria; many nieces and nephews; and numerous friends.
Mr. Abbott served as a sergeant in the Marine Corps as an aviation firefighter. He served in Vietnam. He received the Navy Commendation Medal for heroic achievement, the Good Conduct Military Merit Medal and many marksmanship awards.
After his service in the Marine Corps, Mr. Abbott served as a Fairfax County firefighter for 29 years, from 1971 to 2000. He also was a volunteer member of the Lorton Volunteer Fire Department for many years and will be remembered as the favorite and friendly bingo caller.
Visitation for Mr. Abbott will be held Thursday, Jan. 4, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Mountcastle Funeral Home in Dale City. A funeral will be held at noon Friday, Jan. 5, at the funeral home, with interment following in Quantico National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Department of Surgery, Research Fund, Georgetown University Hospital, 3800 Reservoir Road, N.W., 4th Floor, PHC, Washington, D.C. 20007, Attn: Dr. Patrick Jackson.
