Jackie Vanderveld

Elaine Grace "Jackie" Vanderveld, 81, of Woodford died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006, at VCU Medical Center in Richmond. She was a retired nurse.

She was born Nov. 1, 1925, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Jackson of Paterson, N.J.

Survivors include her husband, Dr. Leonard Vanderveld Jr.; and four adopted children, Ralph Vanderveld and Mary Elizabeth Fanton, both of Pennsylvania, the Rev. Timothy Vanderveld of Minnesota and Joy Hopper of Woodford; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Jackie served for three years during World War II in the Cadet Nurse Corps and during the Korean War as a nurse at an Army hospital in Austria.

She later was appointed the first director of health services at Baptist Bible College of Pennsylvania, where she was instrumental in organizing the college's rescue squad and taught health issues to prospective missionaries.

She also was involved in the beginning of the sports medicine field and taught classes for prospective athletic trainers.

She was always active in the church choir, Sunday school teaching and missions at her church.

A funeral will be held Friday, Jan. 5, at 1 p.m. at Round Oak Baptist Church, Corbin, with the Rev. Randy Newsome officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, Thursday, Jan. 4, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Round Oak Baptist Church Building Fund, or to the Elaine Vanderveld Scholarship Fund, c/o Round Oak Baptist Church, Box 129, Corbin, Va. 22446, which supports student nurses in their training at a hospital in Togo, West Africa.
