Cousins willremain neighbors

Battlefield Notebook

Lauren Ware and Jerry Neufang are first cousins and have been close friends for as long as they can remember.

The Courtland softball player and the Colonial Forge baseball standout will continue their close relationship in college. Both will play at Southern Florida Junior College.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Neufang, an All-Commonwealth District catcher for the Eagles, hit seven home runs and had 30 RBIs last season.

Ware hit a Fredericksburg area-high five home runs during the regular season to go with her hefty .565 batting average.

Colonial Forge coach Shawn Szakelyhidi said it will benefit Neufang to head to Southern Florida with Ware.

"It's an excellent fit," Szakelyhidi said. "He's going to have an opportunity to go there and play a lot of baseball, and at the same time be down there with his cousin. They've been extremely close through the years."

Ware had offers to play at Bridgewater College and Alderson-Broaddus (W.Va).

Both she and Neufang were among the area's top batters last season.

"Her greatest attribute is her work ethic," Courtland coach Jim Burnopp said of Ware last season. "She's also very knowledgeable of the game and can play about any position on the field."

Cavs' Mines honored

Caroline football coach Robert Jenkins said last night that Cavaliers' junior linebacker/running back Jabrel Mines has been selected as one of two Red Zone players of the year in Virginia.

Jenkins said Mines, an All-Battlefield District and Region I selection this past season, will be featured in the Feb. 8 edition of the USA Today.

Jenkins said Mines, who has an official visit to Boston College planned for next month, was chosen because he's also an honor student. "He's a fascinating kid," Jenkins said.

Several Caroline seniors are looking to play collegiately, Jenkins said.

Offensive linemen Matt Porter and Matt Ganoe will visit Division III Bridgewater this weekend.

Quarterback Hagan Driskell has received interest from several schools, including William & Mary.

Offensive lineman Larry Jones, fullback/defensive lineman Marcos Castillo and wide receiver Kadeem Montgomery have all received interest from Division I-AA Norfolk State, among other schools.

"We haven't stopped working," Jenkins said. "I don't know how many tapes I've sent out."

Furman targets early February

Courtland girls basketball coach Jodi Furman said she hopes to return to the Cougars (10-0, 4-0) during the first week of February.

Furman gave birth to a baby girl, Zoe, on Dec. 22. Her Cougars are 3-0 during her absence for maternity leave, including a victory over Spotsylvania last night.
