Spotsylvanians are being shortsighted about VRE

Date published: 1/14/2007

Here are some musings about last Wednesday's newspaper.

Spotsylvanians object to participating in the VRE because it is a long-term commitment and they don't want to pay the additional 2-cents-per-gallon gas tax ["Spotsy, VRE are no closer," Jan. 10].

How shortsighted. Very few things are short-term in this day and age.

How long have they paid taxes to have highways built that now cannot carry the existing traffic?

Perhaps if there were a VRE station in Spotsylvania, more people would use the VRE.

Fredericksburg participates, and you can buy gas in the city for less than here in the county.

A woman bemoaned the fact that the local classical-music station no longer plays her musical preferences. Everyone wants something for free ["Can we have classical music ," Jan. 10].

Very few things are free anymore. If you want classical music on your radio, subscribe to Sirius or XM radio.

Another letter-writer wants the government to enforce church participation. Are our taxes to be raised to pay the church police? Would Spotsylvanians be willing to pay higher taxes for that government service?

I wonder if anyone remembers studying Oliver Cromwell or the Massachusetts Colonies in school.

Enforced participation in anything usually brings about negative results.

Wish there were more Spotsylvanians like yourself. Thank you for your intelligent letter.
